Dr. Andrea Marks, a specialist in adolescent medicine, has spent years refining communication techniques for parents to use when talking to their teens. Though uncomfortable to chat about, topics ranging from sex to urinary tract infections should never be brought up on a “need to know basis.” Make sure your teen gets the right facts, at the right time, from their most trusted source: you. Dr. Marks offers the below advice. “Give yourself a break, and know that you’re among a majority of parents if you’re not entirely comfortable talking about sex-related health topics, like urinary tract infections, with a teenage daughter,” she says. “But remember, this is part of your job. You simply cannot assume your child is getting all the important and correct information at school, from older siblings or friends, or from the web.” |
